The Albanian flag is rectangular, with a ratio of length to width of 7:5. The flag is dark red and a black double-headed eagle is painted in the center. The eagle is a symbol of the national hero Skander, so Albania is also known as the "land of the mountain eagle." In 1939, Italy invaded Albania, and the flag of the double-headed eagle was cancelled. However, in the guerrilla war against the occupying forces, the people still used the flag painted with a double-headed eagle. In 1946, the Republic of Albania was established, and a red five-star with yellow edges was added to the flag. In April 1994, the Red Five Star was cancelled.
